Itinerary:
Day
1: Johannesburg – Kloppenheim Country Estate.
Arrive at Johannesburg International Airport where you will be met by
your driver/guide, or you will be picked up at your hotel. We leave
the city behind us and head for the province of Mpumalanga via the
coal mining towns of the Highveld until we reach the village of
Machadodorp. Our destination is the luxury Kloppenheim Country Estate
where we overnight. Kloppenheim is set on a mountaintop within a
nature reserve. The wine and dinner tonight is beyond expectation. The
four-course gourmet dinner will more than satisfy discriminating
palates. Their wine list won the Diners Club International Award in
2002 and you have more than 6000 bottles to choose from.
Day 2: Kloppenheim
Country Estate – Mount Sheba Nature Reserve, Pilgrims Rest
After
a sumptuous breakfast, we take a scenic mountain route and our first
stop is the Sudwala Caves. Specialist guides will accompany us on a
tour of these fascinating caves. Inside is a huge amphitheatre where
concerts have been held. No crawling necessary!
Back in daylight we proceed to Leydenburg via one of the highest and
most spectacular mountain passes in South Africa, the Long Tom Pass.
Much activity took place here during the Anglo - Boer War and the pass
was named after a cannon used by the Boer fighters.
We leave Leydenburg behind and head for another pass, Robbers Pass,
where stagecoaches were held up during the gold rush era. We overnight
for the next two nights at Mount Sheba Nature Reserve. This
outstanding facility is nestled within a magnificent rainforest with
several interesting walking trails.Dinner tonight is a set menu,
prepared by their award-winning chefs and accompanied by good wines.
Day 3 : Mount Sheba
Nature Reserve, Pilgrims Rest
Today
we explore the nearby mining town of Pilgrim’s Rest. This is a
living museum as the entire town has been declared a national
monument, taking the visitor back to the days of the gold rush in the
1870’s. We enjoy a beer in the old church, now a restored bar! We
visit God’s Window, Pinnacle Rock, Blyde River Canyon and Bourke’s
Luck Potholes for breathtaking scenery. Be sure to have enough film
for photos!
Back to Mount Sheba to explore more walking trails before we have
sundowners and another magnificent dinner.
Day 4: Pilgrims Rest –
Kapama River Lodge, Hoedspruit
Our
route takes us to the fertile Ohrigstad valley and the Echo Caves that
boast evidence of Stone Age inhabitants, as well as the Museum of Man,
set up in the largest Bushmen rock shelter in Africa. We cross the
breathtaking Abel Erasmus Pass, go through the Strydom tunnel until we
reach the Kapama River Lodge where we will stay another two nights.
This lodge is situated among pristine riverine forests and is home to
the elephant, lion and other wild animals. This lodge is a finalist in
the Automobile Association Accommodation Awards 2004.
Lunch will be enjoyed before we leave on a game drive in open
Landrovers. Sundowners will be taken alongside a log campfire.
Dinner tonight will be typical traditional South African food with
good wines, prepared by the owners.
Day 5: Kapama River
Lodge, Hoedspruit
An early morning game drive, a guided walk through the African bush
and towering trees along the riverbanks accompanied by an experienced
ranger to point out the wonders of nature.
We dine tonight on African cuisine that tantalises the taste buds. A
night game drive will give you the opportunity to see nocturnal
animals.
Days : 6 & 7
Hoedspruit - Tangala Bush Camp, adjoining Kruger National Park
|
We
depart for one of the last remaining authentic wildlife experiences in
South Africa, the Tangala Bush Camp.
We stay for two nights at this 22,000-acre private nature reserve,
adjoining the Kruger National Park, with two game drives daily.
This small camp has been specifically designed to be eco friendly and
private. No noisy air conditioners, electric lights or television.
Instead there are spacious rooms, cool in summer and warm in winter,
kerosene lanterns for light, fire geysers for hot water and birdsong
for music.
The cuisine has been specially created to reflect the continent of
Africa. Meals are social occasions and a time to share fascinating
stories of the African bush. Connoisseurs from the Cape winelands have
designed a comprehensive wine list.
During our stay we are sure to encounter a number of wildlife
experiences to remember forever, as this is the ideal Hemingway venue.
