Bayete Zulu Lodge Family Safari.                                                    

Come and share the dream that we call Bayete that is indeed a place where special things happen.  Bought as a farm back in December 1999, this magnificent piece of Zululand has been lovingly rehabilitated to its former glory. Gone are the cattle fences, overgrazed lands and chilli-fields. In their place is what we consider to be one of the most highly stocked and ecologically balanced game reserves in northern Zululand. It has taken us seven years, one crippling drought and more money and hard work than I wish to remember. But it’s been worth it, as you will soon discover.

Only 276 kilometres from Durban, which is a two-and-a-half hour drive or 40 minutes by light aircraft, we are just far enough from civilization for you to leave it all behind and relax.

The Lodge:
Lodge consists of 8 Colonial luxury rooms, all en suite, with spacious sunken baths, open showers and separate toilet.  Each individually decorated room has top quality twin beds with a double fold-out ottoman.  All our rooms are equipped with mosquito nets, air-conditioning, ceiling fans and a mini bar that is well stocked with a selection of beverages and light snacks.  For your convenience, in-room safes are provided for the safekeeping of all cash, travel documents and other such articles.
 

There’s the formal lounge, complete with a fully stocked wine cellar.  Choose from a range of imported cigars or warm yourself with a night cap next to the cosy fireplace.


After a game drive, you can relax in our revitalising rimflow pool, while our staff prepare cocktails for your enjoyment.

The Rano Boma, its walls made from branches and built up piece by piece, captures the drama of an African night and embraces the power of the wilderness. It’s an open-air dining area, perfect for star gazing and lazy evening cocktails.   Lovers and honeymooners  private dinners can be arranged in the most romantic setting under the stars. The Boma is equipped with a fully stocked bar, including a comprehensive selection of excellent South African wines.

The Reserve:
A member of the 22 000 ha Zululand Rhino Reserve. Privately we own the 2 300 ha Mkuze West portion of this reserve. We consider the reserve to be one of the most densely stocked and ecologically balanced in northern KwaZulu-Natal. The reserve consists of a varied landscape of mountains, open plains and dense riverine woodlands. The diversity of its flora and high carrying capacity make this an animal Eden, ensuring guests that regardless of weather or circumstance they will always enjoy excellent game viewing with interesting drives and walks.

Day Drives
Being one of the most densely stocked reserves in Northern KwaZulu-Natal, a drive with one of our knowledgeable field drivers is guaranteed to be an adventure. Come watch our hippos wallow, while their babies ride on their backs.. Tea, coffee and rusks are served on the morning game drive.

Night Drives
Experience the African night with its magnificent skies! Nocturnal species such as ant-bear (aardvark), leopard, genets, night jars and a host of smaller creatures may also be found in the region. The night also allows one the opportunity to use other senses and to relax to the sounds and aroma of Africa. Light snacks  with beverages and alcolhol are served on the evening  drive.

Children:
We welcome children over four years of age. (If you have a very young child, talk to us. If we are not busy and can accommodate you, it will be our pleasure.) Each room is furnished with a leather ottoman that folds out into a double bed to accommodate your little ones at a fraction of the adults’ room rate. There is also a heated swimming pool. Babysitters are available upon request at a nominal fee. Children are free to use the Recreational Centre that is fully equipped with a play area and TV. Please advise us should your child have special diet requirements.

You have done your bit for the year. Rest while your kids entertain themselves at our activity centre, which is equipped with jungle gyms, slides, seesaws, trampoline, swings, tree house, boma, kids' DVDs, TV and Sony Playstations.
